Ségur Summer Dress

We just spent a relaxing Sunday afternoon on the Lake Mendota shoreline and I got to wear my newest make for the first time. Ségur is a lovely summery top and dress pattern by Cozy Little World. There are lots of variations to play with, and I decided on the ruffled button-front dress. I typically don’t add many ruffles to a garment but I have to admit that these ones look pretty damn cute.

I had a little piece of Tencel twill left from a jumpsuit I recently made for a customer,  just enough to make the bodice. I love how fluid and soft this Tencel is. And the mahogany colour is gorgeous! For the skirt, I used an embroidered linen that I bought during our trip to NYC last year. I think these two fabrics look really good together.

I’m 22 weeks pregnant and one of the changes I’ve been experiencing is that my skin has become very sensitive. I’m mostly comfortable in loose clothes and can only wear certain fabrics. Ségur is loose and both Tencel and linen feel great so it checks all the boxes. Although to be completely honest, I made the mistake of serging my seams and that part doesn’t feel as nice when rubbing against my skin… definitely doing French seams next time!

In terms of modifications, I shortened the bodice (about 1 inch) and lengthened the skirt (about 5 inches). This dress was quick and easy to make, except for the gathering part: My basting threads didn’t pull very well over the linen embroideries. In case any readers are interested in making Ségur, I should mention that its instructions are only available in French. French is my first language. However, when it comes to sewing, I learned with English patterns and tutorials. So when I follow a French pattern, I sometimes find myself double-checking the English translation of certain terms 🙂 But Ségur is very straightforward and someone with a little sewing experience can probably figure out how to make it by just looking at the illustrations.

The last thing about Ségur is that I just realized that when I’m back in France for the holidays in a couple of weeks, I won’t be far from the town Ségur. I’m planning a week in Occitania (southwest of France) so now I’m hoping I get to stop by this little town. If I do, I know just the outfit to wear!
