I am Aura

“En avril, ne te découvre pas d’un fil” literally means ” in April, don’t remove a thread (of your clothing)”… Well, except when one of your favourite indie pattern designers kindly offers you to sew their beautiful new collection a little ahead of its spring release. I AM BRILLIANT (featuring two summery patterns I am Aura & I am Hélios) is out today, and I was lucky enough to get my hands on it new a few weeks ago.

I am Aura is an A-line dress with a high-low hem. When I saw the design, I felt like I AM Patterns had read my mind. Simple, elegant and easy to wear, it encapsulates my ideal spring/summer dress. And although it’s not technically a pregnancy sewing pattern, it’s sufficiently roomy to accommodate my growing belly for the next few months. All that to say, I was excited to add this breezy piece to my wardrobe.

And it was an easy, breezy sew too! I cut my pieces on a Friday night, powered the sewing machine during my toddler’s naptime throughout the weekend, and by Sunday night, I was twirling in my new Aura.

The fabric I used is a viscose crepe from Core Fabrics. It features a lovely floral border print which I decided to place around the neckline. Excellent for flowy garments like I am Aura, this crepe was easy to work with, and it pressed well. BONUS: I got to use my hemmer foot (my absolute fave!) to roll the dress’s hem.

I’m so happy with the result! And as the French says, “En mai, fais ce qu’il te plaît” meaning “Ne’er cast a clout till May is out”. Only a few more weeks before I take the tights off!
