Sewing a little black dress has been on my mind for quite some time, and the Sheona Dress & Top pattern was the perfect reason to finally get to it. I was very fortunate to test this lovely pattern by Athina Kakou. The pattern has 5 versions: 2 tops and 3 dresses. I decided on Version 5, a short-sleeved shift dress with narrow ruffled hems.
Upon receiving the pdf pattern, I was excited to see that my measurements matched exactly the sizing chart. No need for adjustment! Yay! I cut in a medium weight black cotton spandex knit that I had in my stash. Although the pictures don’t do it justice, I also used a pretty chiffon fabric for the ruffled hems. The chiffon has a subtle check pattern with small dots of metallic thread. It looks great up close ๐
Sewing the Sheona was quick and satisfying, and I find Athina’s instructions to be clear and comprehensive. I’ve sewn with knits before but for sewists who just are just getting into them, the Sheona is a perfect intro pattern.
I really like the silhouette of this shift dress. A bit snug in the hip/bum area, it is still very comforatble to wear. And it’s exactly what I had in mind for my little black dress: a classic, timeless piece that can work day-to-night and that’s easy to style.
Thanks Athina for creating such a lovely pattern. And now some pictures:
Thanks for looking!

Hi Emmanuelle! What a great dress! Could you please tell me where you bought the pretty chiffon from? Was it online?

Thanks a lot for your comment! ๐ I bought the black chiffon from Joann. I think that it’s also available in white and red.
