Highlands Wrap Dress

I recently spent a week exploring the beautiful Spanish islands of Majorca and Menorca. I got to wear one my newest makes: The Highlands Wrap Dress. It’s a beautiful, easy-to-wear dress that has options for sleeves (sleeveless or short sleeve) and dress length (midi or maxi).

THE PATTERN

This pattern by Allie Olson is very well drafted with thoughtful details. For example, the Highlands includes cleverly hidden buttons on each side to fasten the dress and maintain the garment’s shape, all while maintaining a sleek, button-less look. The Highlands also features an elastic waist and a skirt that is slightly gathered at the back, complimenting the silhouette.

I loved making the side slits with the mitered corners. It was my first time sewing a mitered hem. In addition to the beautiful wide front facings, it really does create a neat finish inside. So neat, in fact, that I sometimes think about wearing the dress inside-out!

THE FIT

I chose the sleeveless midi view. I cut a size 0 based on my bust measurement and it worked out well. Because I’m only 5’1” (the pattern is drafted for a height of 5’6″), I removed a tiny bit of length of the bodice (I would probably remove a tiny bit more at the front fro the next one) + a full inch off the length of the skirt. These were my only alterations.

I love the fit of the back, chest and armholes. It’s a perfect combination of snugness and comfort; I wore it all day on two occasions while in the warm Balearic Islands, and it remained cool, comfortable and classy.

THE FABRIC

I chose a lightweight linen blend with woven metallic gold yarns which gives the dress a slight shimmery look. The linen can wrinkle, but that’s an inescapable characteristic of linen, well worth its look, coolness and comfort (especially in summertime!).

And now some pictures taken over the course of two days of wearing the Highlands, my new favourite wrap dress:

    1. Hello there fellow rose tattoo gal! Thank you very much for your kind words about the dress and my tattoo! 😊 I’ve had that rose for almost 10 years now. It has faded a bit but I still love it very much. Where did you choose to get yours?

      1. You’re so welcome! Both are gorgeous! 🙂 I’ve had my rose for just over ten years now, too, and it has definitely faded quite a lot, but that was partly because the tattoo artist was terrible and used poor quality ink – it was my first tattoo and I had no idea what I was doing and let a random friend of a (now ex) boyfriend tattoo me – a mistake I have since learned from! LOL. I got it on my upper right arm, in memory of my mother right after she passed away, which is the only reason I haven’t gotten it removed/fixed. I still might get it touched up or fixed at some point though, to do her memory justice, just need to find a good tattoo artist and save up! 🙂
